EPURE
Renault Epure was a
result of further safety research. This prototype was based on well-known Renault 5. In 1979 it
was introduced as the smallest safe 4-seat car all in the world. Although this car was
based on R5 model, its engine compartment was adapted for a stronger power unit taken from
R14 model. EPURE´s front part was designed to collapse progressively in case of impact
without damaging passenger cabin. To minimise the danger in case of side impact EPURE was
equipped by a cross reinforcement of the platform. The constructors also took care of
latching of the doors. The fuel tank was enclosed in a safe box and a new fastening safety
belts system with pre-tensioner was used. This system allowed full belt tightness within a
few hundredths of a second after the impact.
